Existence of global-in-time solutions to a generalized Dirac-Fock type evolution equation

We consider a generalized Dirac-Fock type evolution equation deduced from no-photon Quantum Electrodynamics, which describes the self-consistent time-evolution of relativistic electrons, the observable ones as well as those filling up the Dirac sea. This equation has been originally introduced by Dirac in 1934 in a simplified form. Since we work in a Hartree-Fock type approximation, the elements describing the physical state of the electrons are infinite rank projectors. Using the Bogoliubov-Dirac-Fock formalism, introduced by Chaix-Iracane ({\it J. Phys. B.}, 22, 3791--3814, 1989), and recently established by Hainzl-Lewin-Sere, we prove the existence of global-in-time solutions of the considered evolution equation.Comment: 12 pages; more explanations added, some final (minor) corrections include

On the use of laser-scanning vibrometry for mechanical performance evaluation of 3D printed specimens

In this study, we explored the suitability of laser-scanning vibrometry (LSV) for evaluation of the mechanical behavior of rectangular prisms produced by Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF). Our hypothesis was that LSV would be able to discriminate the mechanical behavior of specimens fabricated with different process parameters combinations. Build orientation, raster angle, nozzle temperature, printing speed and layer thickness were the process parameters of interest. Based on a factorial design of experiment approach, 48 different process parameter combinations were taken into account and 96 polylactic acid (PLA) rectangular prisms were fabricated. The characterization of their dynamical behavior provided frequency data, making possible the computation of an equivalent elastic modulus metric. Statistical analysis of the equivalent elastic modulus dataset confirmed the significant influences of raster angle, build orientation and nozzle temperature. Moreover, multivariate regression models served to rank, not only the significant influences of individual process parameters, but also the significant quadratic and cubic interactions between them. The previous knowledge was then applied to generate an ad hoc model selecting the most important factors (linear and interactions). The predicted equivalent elastic moduli provided by our ad hoc model were used in modal analysis simulations of both 3D printed rectangular prisms and a complex part. The simulated frequencies thus obtained were generally closer to the experimental ones (=11%), as compared to modal analysis simulations based on internal geometry modelling (=33%). The use of LSV appears very promising in the characterization of the mechanical behavior and integrity of 3D printed parts. Other additive manufacturing technologies may benefit from the use of this technique and from the adoption of the presented methodology to test, simulate and optimize the properties of 3D printed products. © 2021 The Author

Effects of osmotic and thermal shock on the invasive aquatic mudsnail Potamopyrgus antipodarum: Mortality and physiology under stressful conditions

Invasive freshwater species, such as the exotic mollusc Potamopyrgus antipodarum (New Zealand mudsnail), can frequently survive under harsh conditions, including brackish and hypoxic environments. We experimentally assessed the effects of osmotic (0, 10, 20, 25 and 30 psu) and thermal (20 °C) shock on mortality, activity and physiology of P. antipodarum collected at Capitol Lake, Olympia, Washington, USA, during winter and spring seasons when environmental temperature was 5 and 10 °C respectively. We measured standard metabolic rate and enzymatic activities (malate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, alanopine dehydrogenase) in snails after a 10-day acclimation period at high salinity. Significantly higher mortalities were observed at higher salinities; the strongest effects occurred on snails collected at the end of winter, and exposed to 30 psu and 20 °C (100% mortality in 3 days). When snails were collected during the spring, 100% mortality was observed after 40 days at 30 psu and 20 °C. Standard metabolic rates were significantly lower when snails were exposed to salinities of 25 and 30 psu, even after 10 days of acclimation. Enzymatic activities showed small but significant declines after 10 days at 30 psu reflecting the declines observed in overall metabolism. The physiological tolerances to temperature and salinity displayed by this population of P. antipodarum make its eradication from Capital Lake difficult to achieve.Fil: Paolucci, Esteban Marcelo. Establishing the contributing factors to the resurrection of PIIGS banks following the crisis : a panel data analysis

    Get PDF
In this article, we analyse empirically the factors that allowed for the improvement and strengthening of the banking systems in Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain (known as the PIIGS) during the post-financial crisis period 2011-2016. We use panel data on 200 banks and measure their financial soundness using the z-score. Our results show that the improvement is mainly due to managerial factors. To ensure stability, banks must monitor their loans and avoid non-performing loans. The public authorities should try to control banks’ size, encouraging medium-sized banks since these tend to perform better on average while limiting the existence of banks, whose size and importance (despite economies of scale) can destabilize the entire system in case of bankruptcy. Finally, different from previous studies, we include herein the refinancing programmes into the analysis of financial soundness and show that the financial assistance programs have been necessary to ensure the recovery of the banking systems.peer-reviewe

Scaling laws of strategic behaviour and size heterogeneity in agent dynamics

The dynamics of many socioeconomic systems is determined by the decision making process of agents. The decision process depends on agent's characteristics, such as preferences, risk aversion, behavioral biases, etc.. In addition, in some systems the size of agents can be highly heterogeneous leading to very different impacts of agents on the system dynamics. The large size of some agents poses challenging problems to agents who want to control their impact, either by forcing the system in a given direction or by hiding their intentionality. Here we consider the financial market as a model system, and we study empirically how agents strategically adjust the properties of large orders in order to meet their preference and minimize their impact. We quantify this strategic behavior by detecting scaling relations of allometric nature between the variables characterizing the trading activity of different institutions. We observe power law distributions in the investment time horizon, in the number of transactions needed to execute a large order and in the traded value exchanged by large institutions and we show that heterogeneity of agents is a key ingredient for the emergence of some aggregate properties characterizing this complex system.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
